I once read a book by Stephen covey, it talked about the circles of concern, influence and control. In a nutshell, circumstances that bother you are in your circle of concern but the ones you can control are only those in your circle of influence and control. We all know there are some things, we as individuals, cannot control. For instance, as a naija babe now, I cannot just wake up and say I’m tired of this electricity problem, I don’t want to shout UP NEPA no more, I will build the refineries and solve this problem once and for all, because I love my country and this has got to stop! Well, e fit happen for dream sha, but in real terms, when I wake up, I’ll have to deal with all the sweat from building the refineries in my dream, without electricity in my room to service the fan/air conditioner while I was “sleep-working”.
So on the real, I have to deal with the fact that it’s not in my circle of influence and I can’t solve it on my own. However, what is in my circle of influence is to go buy myself a generator...I pass my neighbour will do the job, but if I’m about the good life, I can as well buy the push to start generator. Whichever one I settle for, I would have solved the electricity problem, maybe not for the nation, but for my house, and for the mean time.
With this in mind, I’ve learned to deal with things from a place I call the centre. I deal with things in my mind. I deal with situations by controlling my reaction to those situations. I remind myself every time that those situations are temporal and there is no point dwelling on them, I then swing into action by solving those problems in my circle of influence.
In likewise manner, I’ll like for us to deal with our situations and circumstances from the centre. Most times, you can’t choose the situation in which you find yourself, you might not even be able to proffer an immediate solution, but you sure as heaven, can choose your reaction to the situation. Train your inner-man to react calmly to situations and focus on those in your circle of influence.
You’ll see how less stressful life becomes when you remind yourself that you are not Superman, you can’t solve all of the world's problems, rather you can deal with it all from the centre. You can focus on your circle of influence and you can own that circle! Make it your own!! Call it your space and fill it with only positives!!! You’ll be surprised how easy life becomes...even easier when you fill that centre with someone that can do for you what you cannot do for yourself. I decided long ago to fill my centre with Christ. Once my spiritual life is intact, my centre is powerful…My life is bliss!
Create your own centre today, it’s a place you can truly control and I hope you choose the right things/people to fill your centre with.
Very interesting !
